Full Version: The Rickard Bengtsson Thread Of Awesome

bonn3
So here's what I'm thinking (mentioned it before) in this thread I post all my short clips and other kinds of awesome. Longer "real" movies will still have their own thread but pretty much all short things consisting of: 5second project, motion graphics, vfx or anything of that nature will be here.

The best advice Jason Esser, of Digital Kitchen, could give to aspiring animations/motion graphics artist was to, everyweek, create ~5seconds of something cool just for your reel. So that's what I'm going to try to do.

Every clip will get it's new post, possibly with some comments about how it was done or something. Then everything will be added here to make it easier to find in the list.

Please comment & critique, I really appreciate it.

The list of clips:

5 Second Project - FAIL
5 Second Project - FAIL (2nd entry)
The xx - Intro
5 Sec Projects 2009 - MONTAGE [youtube]
Random Animation of the Week #001
Abyssus Vexillium - Random animation #002
550D - Skate
550D - Timelapse
Aesop Rock - Holy Smokes [typography]

Enjoy!

All links are to vimeo (at least for now, some youtube)

WOW! Rickard, I pick this one....very powerful imagery!
bonn3

New clip. Not done for anything in particular just messing around with max and after effects.

The video is marked private.
bonn3
Ugh.. dunno why vimeo does this sometimes.
Fixed now.
glesserj
Yeah...that's happened to me on Vimeo too.

I liked the glossy cubes .. I'd sure like to see how you accomplish some of the animations. A short tutorial or walk-thru on the apps would be very interesting smile.gif
bonn3
Thanks Janice,
I basically just animated everything by hand with just a couple of key frames.
All animation was done in 3Ds max so exactly how it did everything is probably pretty max specific. THen I did some cc and color grading in ae.
If you'd like something explained more in depth let me know.

"New" clip.
Just to get the subscribers I have on youtube to come over to vimeo.
Usually don't post the short clips there so those people haven't seen my 5second projects. Here's a montage of the ones from 2009.

Usually try to do a 5 sec animation each week of something cool I can put in my reel. Haven't uploaded them, till now.
So, here's the first completely random animation of the week.

2nd random animation of the week.
Did this intro titel for a friend of mine.
A bit to videocopilot-y for my taste, but he really liked it.

First footage of the new camera, canon eos 550d (rebel t2i)!
No color correction done, shot in 24p and 50p for most shots to get the smooth slow motion.

Hey Richard,

Nice footage on the new camera. Please educate me. When you over-crank the frame rate do you then slow the motion down with the editing program? I never really understood how that worked.

Anyway the picture quality looks great. Nice work!

Gary
bonn3
Let's say your final output is 25fps and you have that set in the project settings.
When importing a file shot at 50 you right click and interpret the footage and set the frame rate to the same as the project (25). This causes it to be slowmotion but still playing back at 100%.

So if you want normal speed you just set it to 200%.
If you want a certain clip in slow motion you get the best quality right away when shooting in a faster framerate, isntead of having to slow it down.

Thanks Rick,

You have explained it beautifully. I Google the subject and the few articles that I had time to look at were not clear at all. I appreciate you help.

I just bought the JVC GY HM100U. Nice small HD camera for my bike trip. As always there are things that I like about it and things they could have done better. The most glaring shortcome so far is the zoom control. It has a zoom ring but it is impossible to zoom smoothly with it. It must go through the processor and if you try to zoom slowly it either does not respond or does it in jerky steps. My cannon had a zoom rate that could be set to slow, medium and fast so no matter how you pushed on the rocker arm it would zoom at a constant rate. I liked that feature.

I really have not had a chance to shoot something yet. I don't when I can get to experiment, we leave for a year long trip by bicycle in seven weeks. Lots to do! I will have to make time to learn this new camera though.

Thanks again for the explanation.

I have the same problem on the 550D it is really hard to get a nice, smooth zoom. luckely for the things I shoot I rarely have to zoom during a shot, if I need to zoom in/out I do so before hitting the record button.

This could be due to the fact that I have pretty much the cheapest lens you can get, I'm sure the high end ones are easier to control.

I do kind of miss the opportunity to zoom in really close with this lens compared to the 15 or 20x zoom that's available on most camcorders.

Looking forward to seeing some tests from you smile.gif

Shot this a few days ago. Didn't have my tripod yet so I did some handheld stuff. Managed to get a few nice shots as the sun was setting.
glesserj
I'm liking that camera Rickard....and it looks like you are too smile.gif
bonn3
I am absolutely am! Best thing I've bought to date.
It's technically a still camera but I wouldn't have minded paying the same price and getting the same thing just not being able to take stills with it.
The video on this thing is just soo great!

Rickard,
I don't know if this happens to anyone else, but when I access your pictures, porn popups appear. shocked.gif This happened another time with your pics. I assume it is related to whatever sight you post your pics on. Just FYI. Dennis
bonn3
Hmm.. that's odd. I've never had any problems with imagevenue before they even ask you to specify that it's "family safe" material you're uploading.

I'll try another host and post a new topic about it in the water cooler instead, not sure how many people check this topic.

Thanks for the info

A slightly more "real" movie shot on the 550d. Was filmed not to long after I got the camera but took a while to edit. Enjoy.

I posted my comments on Vimeo Rickard....another excellent job!

Thanks Janice.
Here comes a new video.

Hey just been checking out a couple of your videos. Love some of those shots in that Fog video! But I really enjoyed the Juggernauts at the gym too. smile.gif

Very nice Rickard!
bonn3
Thanks guys. Been a few weeks of just stuff from the 550d now with summer coming up it's time to get back to animations again.
Here's a quick one. Didn't bother creating and uploading a thumbnail.

That's pretty good! I myself would like to get more into animation. Just been playing around with after effects recently and made some pretty cool exploding text. All from following tutorials though so nothing original yet!
bonn3

New clip and this was a pretty big one in terms of time spent. Every frame hand drawn to get the desired look. And I'm happy with the end result. The clip is part of a musicvideo from uk rapper Kano.

http://vimeo.com/12454233
glesserj
That was so cool. Did you illustrate the colors by hand or colorize it in post?
bonn3
It was all done in black and then I added a two different 4color gradients on top (animated overtime to change color and blend between each other).
I pre composed them and set it to soft light. Then an adjustment layer with glow on top.

Very interesting, what did you use for the panning.
bonn3
Premiere pro.

The stills were shot in the smallest setting possible, 4.5 megapixel, and I put them in a 720p project then just 2 keyframes.
Ann
Clever!

Here's a tribute or what you want to call both to the show Lost and old 8 bit videogames!

All art assets and everything hand drawn in photoshop and then put together and animated in after effects. Both youtube and vimeo.

I liked it. Looked just like those old Super Mario games. I'm sending the link to my son, Darrin. He's a big Lost fan and grew up playing on Ninetendo.
