Hi, I have a problem.
Ive recently done an Adobe Premiere 6.5 project, videos taken from a mini DV cam, PAL, 25fps, screen 720 x 576. Ive completed the project and export it as Quicktime, DV-PAL and its looks good when played on my computer. However, when I burn on a DVD using Toast, setting it to DVD PAL, and when I played the DVD on my television, fast moving objects (people, cars, etc) would have these "blurry strobe" effects around them while those that are not moving fast seemed clear and focused. I dont think it is the TV cos Ive tried on 3 different TVs (crt, lcd) and 3 different DVD players, all set to PAL and they all have the same effect. When I play the DVD in my computer however, there wasnt any 'obvious' problems. So, I dont know where I went wrong here. During the export of the movie or during the burning of the DVD. I hope someone could help me..
THANKS!!
Ann
It's possible you've got your fields mix-up. DV is always lower field first. So check your fields in Premiere as well as Toast.

doesn't pal have a different field setting...especially PAL formatted DVDs i thought they were upper field first???
Ann
It has nothing to do with PAL (or NTSC). When captured from a dvd/HD or HDD-camera its upper field. DV is always lower field first except some capturecards like the Matrox, it only caputure in upper field (and can be a pain in the but). Export settings always have to be the same as the project settings. Blurry strobe effect usually sounds like mixed up fields, but then again i could be wrong. unsure.gif

Thanks Ann, I shall try and see the Fields. However, Toast has no options regarding Fields, all they have is 2 choices, PAL or NTSC..
Thanks again

Hi Ann, I just found out that all along my Fields have been set to lower fields first. Both for my project and when I am exporting it. My Toast however has no option regarding Fields. Is there other burning softwares for Mac which is good for burning DVD movies?

really???

PAL-DV Frame size: 720 x 576
Frame aspect ratio: 5:4
Pixel aspect ratio: 1.067
Frame rate: 25 fps
Field order: upper field first

I don't understand this answer. What does it represent?
Maybe this will help

I'm running out of ideas> You could try a different brand of dvd or try to lower the bitrate or the burn-speed.

im checking out the link you gave me. Thanks Ann.. I think my problem lies over the Fields issue. I think im gonna start from scratch again, capturing the movie from the DV, and take note of every little options. sometimes the default option is not the best option. hehe.
Thanks Ann, and mutantx.

Hi all, If you have created an MPG file from DV, take a good look at the GOP structure in the file you are going to create. The GOP Structure (Group Of Pictures) determines how many individual frames will be averaged to produce each second of Video. Where there is a fast action sequence, a small GOP structure is required, if there is a sequence with slow action, a higher GOP structure is required. It may depend on what codec settings you are using to generate the MPG. This is quite a critical setting and getting it right in the first place is not easy.
Take a look at the following Link. http://www.digitalfaq.com/dvdguides/conver...enc/tmpgenc.htm

This explaines MPG creation using Tempenc which give a high degree of control creating MPG files.

As Ann quite correctly points out Field Settings are critical, but if the GOP settings and Bit rate are not correct, you will get a strobing effect. This can usually be seen in faster sequences and appears to be large square or blocky looking edges to angles within the frame of the Screen.

I am not familier with the Application "Toast" on the MAC, (I use a MAC when it is raining tongue.gif) (PC's rule the world thaks to BG barf.gif )but I suspect it is using quite a general set of instructions to produce the resulting MPG file.

Hope this Helps.
Best Wishes

sorry ann what i'm asking is that all along i've been reading that PAL was upper fields first and then you came here and said that it didn't matter...so just trying to figure that out.
Ann
Don't believe everything you read. LOL
Check out Lynda.com it has a nice tutorial on Digital Video Principles.
