What do you do when they play copyrighted songs for every single song at the reception? Do you just remove the music and replace with your own?

Interesting, and very good question.
I'll be interested to see what others say. As a side note, do you all think every dj/band/etc gets all the 'performance, synchronization/etc' permissions they need to be able to play or perform the songs they do at weddings? -------------------- Golden Eagle Productions

typically how long are your wedding videos? A lot depends on the length of the ceremony. A traditional Catholic ceremony can last up to 1 hour. I don't cut much (if any) of the ceremony. Usually, a finished video with photo montage, pre ceremony, full ceremony, post ceremony, reception, and re-cap goes about 1.5-2 hours, again, depending on ceremony length. -------------------- Golden Eagle Productions

Fortunately, Bands don't need permission or have to pay royalties just to play someone elses music (otherwise cover bands would be in trouble) those rules only apply for recording their music. However you are right by making the wedding video technically you are recording the music. For wedding videos, I don't think that there will be any copyright lawsuits over such small personal videos. If you use one of these wedding videos for your advertising, then yes cut the music.
If it is an issue, then just tell the couple being married that they are responsible for paying for the copyright of the music. I don't think that they will mind paying an additional $50,000 for each song. Just kidding. Seriously, I really don't think that any royalty lawsuits would ever occur for private home viewing over wedding videos. Every person in the world would be liable. |

It wouldn't be surprised to find out that Bands that play other people's music are suppose to pay royalties...I'm sure the top bands pay royalties.
I've had Catholic ceremonies last well over an hour...I don't use a set length for a video (although I tell people a range), it really depends on what happens during the day. -------------------- _______________________________

If a one camera shoot. When is the best time to change tape? Or is it just down to good guess work. If you are talking about a Catholic ceremony, take it from a good ole' Catholic boy, either during bringing up the gifts (usually after the sermon and vows), or, if you can wait, during communion, since that period is just quite a few people walking up the aisle to receive communion. Other types of ceremonies, it's good guess work. -------------------- Golden Eagle Productions

Bringing-up of gifts can be pretty quick. I change during communion (get the main participants on tape then change). I always ask how long the ceremony will be, although I don't always get an accurate answer.

I dont worry about background music playing during annoucnements and things like that. For spotlight dances and highlights i normally replace the soundtrack.

Have not visited this site for some time. I used to log in here so often I had to quit for awhile to get a chunk of my life back. I did however learn an enormous amount bout editing here in a short period of time. I just wasted that 300 bucks I paid for the PPro total training set. ---About the copywrite problem. That was discussed, I believe on this site, at length way back, and the conclusion here was the same as I discovered every where I looked for an answer. That is: If the music is recorded as ambient sound as part of the scene you are taping, then there is nothing wrong with that and no permission needed. Like I guess, if you filmed someone at a Coke machine, do you need Cokes permission to use their logo on that machine in your film? Now, if you add their music from Cd,s they provide or request, then I think the routine is for them to get permission or you get permission. That would be a violation, not withstanding the fact that you would be hard pressed to find a videographer that isn't guilty of it. Well, you will probably get a lot of opinions on this: We always do. So good luck
